Only obligatory prayers are made up — not sunnah or nafl. Sources: Banuri Town Darul Ifta: qaza is for the fard prayers and witr; Ayatollah Sistani, qaza prayers.
When does the count start? (bulugh)
Prayers become obligatory at bulugh (puberty), which is known by its physical signs. If there were no signs:
- Hanafi: 15 lunar years for boys and girls; a girl may reach bulugh from 9 lunar years. (Banuri Town Darul Ifta)
- Ja’fari (Sistani): 15 lunar years for boys, 9 lunar years for girls.
Lunar (Hijri) years are about 11 days shorter than solar years, so 15 lunar years is about 14½ years by the calendar. If you are unsure, estimate — the fatwas advise counting by your best judgement.
Women: haidh and nifas
Prayers missed during haidh (menstruation) and nifas (post-natal bleeding) are not made up in either school. The calculator subtracts your average haidh days each month and your total nifas days.
How to make up qaza-e-umri
- Pray one missed prayer with each current one. Banuri Town Darul Ifta recommends praying one qaza of the same time with each daily fard prayer — e.g. a qaza Fajr after today’s Fajr.
- Intend a specific prayer: “the first (or last) Fajr I missed”, and so on.
- Avoid the three forbidden times — sunrise, zawal (midday) and sunset.
- Keep a log — the calculator shows how many sets remain.
Ask a scholar for your case. This counts prayers using the rulings cited. For questions about a specific situation — doubts about bulugh, travel, illness — ask a mufti or scholar you trust. For a person who has died with qaza prayers, see the fidya calculator.
