The kaffara for a broken fast
- Hanafi: fast 60 consecutive days; if the series is broken it restarts. Only someone truly unable to fast may instead give 60 poor people one sadqa-e-fitr each (or feed them two meals; or one poor person for 60 days). One kaffara covers several fasts broken in the same Ramadan if no kaffara was paid in between; fasts broken in different Ramadans each need their own. The broken fast must also be made up. (Banuri Town Darul Ifta)
- Shia (Sistani): fast for two months, or feed sixty poor people, giving each one mudd (about 750 g) of food — a separate kaffara for each day. (sistani.org, ruling 1630)
The kaffara applies to deliberately eating, drinking or marital relations during a Ramadan fast without a valid excuse. Breaking a fast by mistake, illness or for other valid reasons requires only a make-up fast.
Rulings vary. Amounts follow the institutions cited. For your own circumstances, consult a mufti or scholar you trust.
