When fidya applies

  • For fasts: only someone very old and weak, or chronically ill with no hope of recovery, who can never make up the fasts, pays one fitrana per fast. Someone who is temporarily ill, pregnant, nursing or travelling makes the fasts up later instead. (Banuri Town Darul Ifta)
  • For a deceased person’s prayers (Hanafi): fidya is paid for each missed prayer including witr — six per day — if the deceased left a will (wasiyyat) for it, from up to one-third of the estate; heirs may also pay it voluntarily. (Banuri Town Darul Ifta)
  • Shia (Sistani): fidya for a fast is one mudd — about 750 g — of food such as wheat or rice, given to a poor person. (sistani.org)

Rulings vary. Amounts follow the institutions cited. For your own circumstances, consult a mufti or scholar you trust.

FAQ

Fidya — questions

Only a person who is very old and weak, or chronically ill with no hope of recovery, and so can never make up the fasts. Someone who will recover must make up the fasts later instead.

One sadqa-e-fitr amount per fast. At the CII’s 1447 AH wheat rate that is Rs 300 per fast, or Rs 9,000 for 30 fasts.

In the Hanafi school, if the deceased left a will (wasiyyat) to pay it, fidya is paid for each missed prayer including witr — six per day — from up to one-third of the estate. Heirs may also pay it voluntarily.

Ayatollah Sistani’s rulings set the fidya for a fast at one mudd (about 750 g) of food, such as wheat or rice, given to a poor person.
